Sightings from the south

This book wants to be, and to a large extent succeeds, a just product of sincere and responsible culture. The pages in which it unfolds are carriers of acute reflections of characters endowed with freedom of mind, scientific method, correctness of style. The correlation between the various contributions is appropriately entrusted to the code of reading typical of the wise acumen of the South. Then it must also be said that this book remains unfinished until the careful reader intervenes that offers the precise cement of connection to the separation of writings thus making the parts communicating, unifying the structuring and making discursive the whole. In fact it is a dignity recognized to the reader-co-author. In this way the cultural continuity remains favored and privileged that precisely by proceeding beyond the authors and the written pages realizes the primary social equality leaving autonomous, and never prevaricating, the specificities according to a functional logic related to the joints of a mosaic. In this regard it is always from the South that the example comes thinking of the exceptional mosaic floor of the cathedral of Otranto. The South as a whole is living history, that is, a great past full of universal bets and existential leaven of today and tomorrow. Therefore, the South is not a museum, but a life; not a photocopy life, but a life that expands and improves. The South is ultimately a humanism that is born with history and that has no sunset. It is soul, pneuma, taught us the Greeks, harmony preached us from Metapontus Pythagoras twenty-five centuries ago. Simon Peter, bearer of Christian salvation, passed through this South twenty centuries ago. From the harmony of Pythagoras and, above all, from the Christian sharing, the South cries out to Europe and to the world the rule of universal culture that today is summed up in the justice of welcome, showing an Ionian sea swollen by the weeping despair of the many thousands of women and men who, daring to hope for European civilization, fall and drown in the infamous path made of human wickedness and unguarded waves. The South welcomes and shares: the South does not make calculations, but humanism and culture.
